Area of Research: Canadian Multi-scale Urban Index

Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow

Position Summary: The Centre for Urban Environments and the Department of Geography, Geomatics, and Environment at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship. This fellowship will apply mixed-methods research to develop a Multi-Scale Urban Index for Canada’s Urban Areas. The successful candidate will contribute to a project integrating geospatial analysis and qualitative research to develop a Multi-Scale Urban Index for Canada’s urban areas. This research will enhance our understanding of urban spatial dynamics, supporting policymakers and stakeholders in making data-informed decisions for sustainable and equitable urban development.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engage in qualitative research, including interviews, focus groups, or surveys, to integrate expert experiences into the index development.
  • Conduct geospatial analysis to examine urban spatial patterns and contribute to developing a Multi-Scale Urban Index.
  • Synthesize quantitative and qualitative data to enhance the accuracy and applicability of the Multi-Scale Urban Index.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including researchers, policymakers, and community stakeholders, to ensure research relevance and impact.
  • Prepare reports, visualizations, and policy briefs to communicate findings to academic, government, and public audiences.
  • Support knowledge translation efforts, including presentations, publications, and workshops, to inform urban planning and policy decisions.
  • Mentor peer researchers and contribute to knowledge mobilization efforts.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a field providing relevant knowledge and experience (completed within the last 5 years).
  • Experience with geospatial analysis using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial data processing.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Proficiency in data visualization and mapping techniques to present complex spatial information effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce reports, research papers, and presentations for diverse audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Proven ability to publish in high-impact academic journals.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in research.

Other Preferred Qualifications/Assets

  • Familiarity with statistical programming languages (e.g., R, Python) for spatial and urban data analysis.
  • Knowledge of urban planning, environmental justice, and socio-spatial inequalities.
  • Experience engaging with community stakeholders, policymakers, or urban planners in research projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage research projects, including data management, ethical considerations, and collaborative work.

Salary: $65,000.00 annual salary

Term: This position is funded for one year, with renewal for a possible two additional years.

FTE: This is a full-time term position

The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s research and professional development and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work.

Employment as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto is covered by the terms of the CUPE 3902 Unit 5 Collective Agreement. This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 5 Collective Agreement.
