DATE: FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2026
TIME: 6:30PM
LOCATION: TIFF Lightbox (100 King St W, Toronto)
The series opens with the North American premiere of Murmures, an experimental short film by acclaimed Rwandan filmmaker Kivu Ruhorahoza and visual artist Christian Nyampeta. Inspired by Birago Diop’s 1947 poem “Les Souffles”, Murmures explores the ancestral hauntings that breathe life into contemporary Africa. Wandering through the streets of Dakar speculating on the past and present lives of its inhabitants, Murmures offers a meditation on memory, ritual, diasporic longing, and symbolic heritage.
This short will be followed by the Canadian premiere of Under the Hanging Tree. Namibian filmmaker Perivi Katjavivi sets a gritty, supernatural thriller against the backdrop of Namibia’s genocidal past. An investigation into a mysterious murder on a remote German farm in the Namibian desert forces police officer Christine Mureti to confront the haunted depths of her country’s colonial past.
