L'IMAGE Exhibition

On September 20th, we hosted an exhibition of the L’IMAGE project comics, a collaboration between the International Education Center and Professor Ai Taniguchi that illustrates the lived experience of multilingualism and language identity through comics with the aim of developing linguistic empowerment and contributing toward intercultural competency, empathy, and awareness that all forms of language are valid.

There was a great turn out and students left loads of positive feedback about the exhibit.

L'IMAGE (Language, Identity, Multiculturalism and Global Empowerment) Project is a public linguistics communication project with two major objectives:

  1. To educate the university community about linguistic diversity in order to increase community members' intercultural competence
  2. To learn about real students' lived linguistic experiences to inform linguistics educators' teaching practices and universities' EDID practices.

Professor Taniguchi teaches linguistics in the Department of Language Studies at UTM. She has interviewed 13 amazing multilingual students at UofT and has turned stories about their multilingualism into digital comics. Each story is accompanied by a "5-Minute Linguistics" infographic that has educational content about the language(s) spoken by the student. These comics and infographics are being used globally as teaching and public outreach materials in linguistics and beyond.
